How To Achieve Career Success Without Sacrificing Your Faith or Family

Dr. Qaali Hussein

You might have come across an Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, or a blog post, or heard me speak or on a podcast interview.  Whatever brought here, I’m glad you made it!

Does this sound familiar?

“You’re too ambitious for someone who is _______” (fill in the blank with gender, race, etc)

“Someone like you doesn’t become _______” (fill in the blank with high ranking and high paying profession!)

“What about your family? Who is going to raise your children if you work?”

I was 15 years old when I was told that I was “too ambitious” because I wanted to become a surgeon.  That’s because I also wanted to maintain my hijab as a Muslim woman.  And I also wanted to have a family.

The overwhelming advice I received?

“It’s impossible! You have to give up something. Either your hijab or your family.  Maybe even both if you really want to be a surgeon!”

And as I struggled to achieve this “impossible” dream, I learned the harsh reality that limits so many women’s potential:

The systems we navigate (higher education institutions and the workplace) were NOT designed for us or our unique needs.

And we’re advised to either fit in or give up.

That social norms and expectations are set in stone, and no one can change them.

I wholeheartedly disagree.

I believe you can challenge and change these systems to meet your needs as you accomplish your goals.

You don’t have to sacrifice who you are or what you believe in to achieve your career and life goals.

Each of us has the power to be the change we seek.

This is why I founded the Defiance Academy, a personal and professional development platform for those facing the unique challenges of navigating systems that were not designed for them to thrive.

Because I believe You Have Power.

An my goal is to help you unleash that power.
